10 Things London Students MUST Do
By Student Cribs | July 3, 2023 | Reading Time: 7 minutes
Being a student in London comes with many, many perks and one of those are the vast amount of activities that are available to you. What’s even better is that some of them won’t cost you much at all! However, the biggest tip of all is to make full use of your student discounts! There are plenty of student promotions available to help you save a lot of £££, so definitely make use of them!
Museums
Some of London’s best museums are completely free to enter! The Victoria and Albert Museum houses some of the world’s greatest decorative arts and is specifically ideal for any lovers of fashion. The British Museum and the Science Museum are also free and two of the most popular museums in London (and they’re interactive), so if you haven’t already been, they’re definitely worth a visit. The Natural History Museum is great for any dinosaur or sea life fan, and the outside area houses an ice rink from October to January every year! Other free museums include the Imperial War Museum, Tate Modern, The National Gallery and many more.
Be a Tourist
Whether you’ve lived in London your entire life or you’ve just moved here, everyone should be a tourist for at least a day! Hop on an open top bus tour of all of London’s famous sights and whether you choose a day tour, or an exciting ‘London By Night’ tour, you’re bound to have fun! You can even check out the Thames River tours, sit back with your pals and watch as you pass by London on a boat.
Picnic in the Parks
The choice of parks in London is ridiculous, but they all have their own unique charm. Make the most of the British summer (a rare sighting) by grabbing a few friends for a cute picnic – better than sitting indoors at a restaurant which you can do during the many rainy days ahead. From Hyde Park to Hampstead Heath and everything in between, check it out!
Transport
You can’t live in London and have never been on the famous Boris Bikes (otherwise known as Santander Cycles), come on guys! Swap boring bus rides for exciting trips over the river on the Emirates Air Line or on the Thames Clipper! If you’d like to make a day of it, grab yourself an Explore London Combined Tickets which includes all three at a discounted price.
If you haven’t heard of Notting Hill Carnival, where have you been?! Described as being ‘Europe’s biggest street festival and a vivid spectacle representing London’s multicultural past and present’ it’d be silly not to check it out. From the amazing food to the awesome music, it’s a great way for you and your friends to enjoy the bank holiday weekend.
Every year, London Pride takes place in Central London, and every year it just gets better and better. The parade as well as many other events are a must see! So, head down to support the LGBT+ community and enjoy the fantastic event!
Chinatown is a fantastic place to visit all year round; however, things get very exciting in February as the Chinese New Year celebrations take place. Be sure to check out the amazing food at the many restaurants located along Chinatown to enjoy their festive menus. However, remember to book in advance as it tends to get very busy!
Ice Skating
Ice skating in London during the festive season should be very high on your list of things you simply have to do, whether you’re a skating pro or can barely let go of the sides, it’s a fabulous time that’ll have you and your mates laughing hysterically! Though some ice rinks are only open during winter, there are many open all year round like Alexandra Palace and Lea Valley.
Nights out
While London nights out are notoriously known as being rather expensive, your student status can change all of that! Some clubs offer free entry for student card or NUS holders before a certain time, so be sure to check this out and plan your nights out wisely! Some clubs also offer discounted drinks on certain nights or for student card holders.
– Tiger Tiger – expensive but has student nights
– Popcorn @ Heaven – entry free with student card
– Zoo Bar – Student nights Monday-Thursday
With 700 £5 tickets on offer for every play for the yard (standing), which has the best view of stage, you can go and enjoy some of your favourite plays and get taken back to the place where theatre started, back when it was fast, fun and furious! This is also a great alternative to the expensive West End plays.
We have some incredible cribs available in London, so check them out and make sure you don’t miss out!
