Ten things every Newcastle Student MUST do

Ten things every Newcastle Student MUST do

With nearly 30,000 students currently in Newcastle, this amazing city has thousands of different places to go, experiences to do and things to see! While at University, your time in Newcastle will absolutely fly by, so make sure you make the most of all that this fantastic city has to offer.

1.       Have a Stottie

Obviously while in Newcastle you have to do as the locals do and this Geordie snack beats any cakes or rolls you might have had back home.

2.       Visit the Quayside and bridges at the Tyne

You can’t possibly live in Newcastle and not see the fantastic bridges that arch across the River Tyne. Enjoy these epic views from one of the restaurants or bars along the water’s edge or even just go for a stroll or a run. Taking a walk over the Gateshead Millennium Bridge is a must – you can even feel it moving as you walk!

3.       See some live music

Newcastle is famous for having a huge variety of amazing music venues. The largest is Metro Radio Arena, which has played host to some incredible artists including John Legend, Little Mix and The Killers. The O2 Academy has seen the likes of Dizzee Rascal and Zara Larsson, and there are hundreds of smaller more unique venues for you to enjoy as well.

4.       Have a pint of Newcastle Brown Ale

Either love it or hate it, this drink is unique to Newcastle, so you’ve just got to have a try!

5.       Go to a Newcastle United Match

Newcastle are finally in the Premier League once again and their home St James’ Park is definitely somewhere that needs to be visited before you leave. So make sure you’re in the Gallowgate end and take in the incredible match day atmosphere!

6.       Head down to the Grainger Market

…and grab a bargain! Located tucked away from the busy city centre and all its high street brands is the Grainger Market. It is bursting with local brands and hidden gems and has everything you can think of, from food to clothes to trinkets.

7.       Have a laugh at The Stand

The Stand is one of the best comedy clubs in the North. Having welcomed the likes of Jason Cook, Jason Byrne, Matt Richardson and Frankie Boyle, The Stand is the home of both big names and emerging talent.

8.       Visit The Gate

The Gate is a great place to visit if you’re in search of some entertainment. It’s Newcastle’s most popular and best entertainment centre and is only a 10 minute walk away from Northumbria University’s campus. The Gate is filled with restaurants, bars, nightclubs, a cinema and even a casino!

9.       Go to The Baltic

The Baltic is a great place to visit for anyone who wants to experience some culture or arts. It was converted from an old mill and sits just across the Millennium bridge. Entry here is free, so it’s a great place to go as a student who doesn’t want to spend unnecessary money. The exhibitions change regularly and there’s a viewpoint on the top floor where you can take in some breathtaking views of Newcastle.

10.   Go ice skating at the Centre for Life

There’s nothing better than ice skating at Christmas and where better to do so than on Tyneside. The outdoor rink arrives in Times Square every year and whether you glide around the ice like a natural or you spend the whole time clutching the sides while your feet wobble around below you, this is a great way to finish off first term, before you head back home for Christmas.
