10 Things Every Keele Student MUST Do

With Keele University overlooking the town of Newcastle-under-Lyme and surrounded by a wide range of cafés, bars, pubs and restaurants. You can head to Hanley for clubbing and shopping but what else is there to do in this fantastically historic town? We’ve complied a list of our top 10 things to do in Keele, so that you make the absolute most of your time at University.
If you want to drink delicious ales in the heart of Newcastle-under-Lyme, the Bridge Street Ale House is the place to be. A traditional pub with a fantastic atmosphere and definitely one to visit!
Escape Rooms are a great way to spend an afternoon with your friends. It’s an interactive and intuitive real-life escape game where you’re locked in a room with a group of 2-6 participants and have just 60 seconds to solve the puzzles and make your escape. Do you have what it takes?
If you need an escape from the busy Uni and town life or just fancy some fresh ait, Trentham Gardens at the Trentham Estate is the place for you. The beautiful gardens provide peace and quite but also fun and action, so wonder through the flower gardens or get lost in the maze and enjoy this great day out.
Also in Trentham, the Trentham Monkey Forest is another great day out for those wanting some animal interaction! The only place in the UK where you can walk amongst 140 Barbary Macaques and even watch them being fed.
A great way to spend an evening or a day away from busy Uni life is to visit the New Vic Theatre. It’s a playhouse in the round and is the home to drama productions, music concerts and plenty of enjoyment!
Newcastle-under-Lyme is hugely famous for its pottery and all the history that it brings to the town. The famous Wedgwood is a factory which is still up and running in the area, and is even open to visitors. There are regular events on for all students, so why not head down and make some new crockery for your flat!
7. Alton Towers
Just in the small village of Alton is one of the largest theme parks in the U.K. Alton Towers is approximately a 30-minute journey from Keele Uni and you can get a bus from town right to the entrance! It’s an excellent way to celebrate finishing assignments, exams or just to clear your head of Uni work and have some fun!
8. Try an Oatcake
Trying an Oat-cake is an absolute must while in this part of the world. Whether you like them sweet or savoury, this is something you cannot miss out on! Westport Lake is home to The Oatcake Boat where you can join Kay and her team for the best oatcakes about.
All of the pottery at the Emma Bridgewater Museum is made from cream-coloured earthenware and is all handmade – a truly local product! So, head down and have an explore, you might even leave with a unique and personalised piece.
10. Carnage in Hanley
Carnage is one of the best events of the year, where students from Keele, Staffordshire and Manchester Met University all gather in the city of Hanley for a massive pub crawl. Over 2000 students turn up every semester, dressed to fit the theme and ready to have a good time!
There’s so much to do in this fantastic city and before you know it, your time at Uni will be over, so make the most of what Keele has to offer and try and complete everything on this list!
