10 things every Cardiff student MUST do

10 things every Cardiff student MUST do

Students make up 20% of Cardiff City’s population which means there are plenty of things to do, places to visit and people to meet during your time at University! So we’ve created this 10 step guide to show you what you’re likely to experience whilst you’re studying in the city, and hopefully some new ideas you’ll be glad to know about!

1)      Be a tourist:

Your time at university is going to fly by, so make sure you soak up the culture whilst you’re here! Cardiff is famous for its major tourist attractions including the National Gallery of Wales, the Principality Stadium and of course, Cardiff Castle. As its right in the centre of town, there’s no excuse not to see this impressive castle, especially during the festive period – the light up reindeers are a pretty good Instagram opportunity!

2)      Enjoy a ‘Revs (for Bevs)’ night:

Let’s face it – as a student, you’ll find any excuse to go out and have a drink with your friends. So why not make it a night out in Revolutions where you can dress up, dance to some old school R&B and sling back your favourite drink!

3)      Experience a Game day:

You’ll definitely experience one of these whilst you’re studying in Cardiff. The city fills with excited fans and the atmosphere is great! If you can, why not buy a ticket and watch the match in the Principality Stadium or watch it in the fanzone.

4)      Brave an SU Wednesday:

Cardiff students and SU Wednesday’s go hand in hand. Try and get there early to avoid the queue so you can be first in line for every student’s poison – the humble VK. Whether you’re heading there for a social or just with your mates, it’ll always end the same way – “cheesy chips and curry sauce please!”

5)      Go to Barry Island:

…  and visit Stacey’s hometown! If you’re not already a fan of Gavin and Stacey, then why not see what’s occurin’ in the arcade and have fish and chips by the sea? It’s lush!

6)      Take a ‘hangover’ trip to Café 37:

This cheap and cheerful café is situated bang in the middle of Cathays and offers both English and American breakfast options for an absolute steal – just under a fiver! If you live in the Cathays area, or passing through it, or just need something to relieve your hangover, then you need to take trip to Café 37. Better yet, if you’re struggling to make it out of bed – they also deliver!

7)      Avoid a breakdown in the ASSL:

As a Cardiff University student, you’ll be no stranger to the sound of typing, heavy sighs and stressful breakdowns that come alongside the ASSL. But once you’ve finished questioning the student life, make sure to head home to your new besties and destress with a good film, plenty of snacks and a cup of tea (or maybe something stronger!)

8)      Take a trip to the Beacons:

Take a trip along the Breacon Beacons and enjoy the beautiful Welsh scenery. With lakes, hills and waterfalls, it’s the perfect opportunity to get outdoors and have a break from work – plus its free!

9)      Have a Welsh cake:

If you’re living in Wales then you’ll need try a Welsh cake! Immerse yourself in all things Welsh and head down to the Castle Arcade where you’ll be able to find the infamous snack.

10)   ;Visit Cardiff Bay  :

Just on the edge of Cardiff, the Bay offers a more relaxing area for dinner and drinks which makes it a perfect spot for celebrations or romantic dates – it also has a Nando’s so it’s a winner all round!

These are only a few of the things you’ll experience during your years at Cardiff University! I’m sure you’ll come across many more fun, memorable and cringe-worthy moments whilst studying in the city – and we’d love to hear them!
