10 THINGS EVERY SALFORD STUDENT MUST DO
By Student Cribs | July 3, 2023 | Reading Time: 6 minutes
Despite what you may think, there is lots to see and do for students living in Salford – and for prices that won’t break your student budget! So we have put together this list of cheap and free things to do in the local area that are all less than a 30 minute walk away from Salford University. So if you’re looking for something to do on the weekend, or just want to procrastinate on weekdays, there is something for you here. Here is 10 things every Salford student must do…
HISTORY & CULTURE:
This first half is for those of you who are a little bit refined, a little bit cultured, looking to take in some views and appreciate the history of the local area.
1. Salford Quays
The Salford Quays are one of Salford’s greatest features. Originally the site of the Manchester Docks, the Salford Quays became one of Britain’s largest urban regeneration projects following the closure of the docks in 1982. This modern waterfront destination now has some brilliant views, great architecture, bars & restaurants, and if you’re looking to do something different, they even offer river tours.
2. Media City
Also located in Salford Quays, Media City describes itself as “An international hub for technology, innovation and creativity”. If you’re a media student you will already know Media City is home to the University of Salford’s media teaching and research facilities. It also houses the BBC, ITV and Kellogg’s! It is a great place to have a nosey around in and is full of places to eat, things to do and viewing platforms that overlook the canal and city.
3. The Lowry
The Lowry is a theatre and gallery complex in the heart of Salford. In runs theatre productions, exhibitions and other exciting seasonal events that are regularly updated on their website. If you fancy an evening of culture with your mates, watching a quirky or unique production with a glass of wine in hand, whether it be drama, comedy or an opera (why not??), this is the place to go – with tickets starting at only £16.50!
4. Salford Museum & Art Gallery
Whether you’re an art enthusiast or not, we all love a gallery day once in a while. The Salford Museum and Art Gallery is dedicated to the history of Salford and Victorian art and architecture. You can wonder round at your own leisure, appreciating the arts and culture and learning something new. There is even opportunities for workshops, classes and socials with tickets starting at about £8!
5. Ordsall Hall
This ex-Tudor home is not only extremely beautiful and very Instagram worthy, but is also host to loads of activities, workshops and entertainment like an open air theatre (probably best to save that one for summer)! Perfect for a chill day out!
FUN & RECREATION:
Okay, so we’ve pretended to be cultured for a bit. Now, let’s get to the fun stuff – the kind of things you do to let off steam after a long week, or day, or lecture.

COCKTAILS
6. Junkyard Golf
So this is basically the coolest min-golf course you’ll ever go to. With 9 holes, built from literal junk and random parts (we love recycling), the venue offers delicious cocktails and plays great music as you go around the course. Plus, its 50% off golf for students Sunday to Thursday – sweet!
7. Lowry Outlet
The Lowry Outlet is located in Media City and offers huge discounts – up to 70% off – in a huge range of clothes shops, restaurants, show shops, healthcare brands and it also has a gym and a cinema. The perfect spot for a shopping day on a budget.
8. All Star Lanes
There is nothing quite like a game of bowling with your closest friends. Laughing at your mate’s gutter ball and the pure joy when you get a strike is unmatched. All Star Lanes is a modern bowling alley where you can play, eat, drink and enjoy the fun. And the best bit is that they offer amazing student discounts – 50% off food, £5 bowling and £2.50 drinks. Sorted.
9. Crystal Maze
The Crystal Maze is without a doubt the COOLEST day out you could ever have. If you haven’t seen the show, it involves teams of contestants working together to solve challenges in a maze, to win crystals (duh) and eventually win money at the end! Although you can’t win money at the live experience, you can relive the game with a group of friends in real life! All for the student discounted ticket price of £20 (on selected dates)! – This one is a must try!
10. The Alchemist
The Alchemist is the most amazing cocktail bar that exists. Ever. Located in the Salford Quays, it’s a science themed bar that serves the most incredible and Instagram worthy cocktails with dry ice, colour changing elements and served in cool glasses like test tubes! You can sign up for offers but otherwise, save this one for when your loan has just come in…
There is something for everyone here so why not try something new!
