10 Things Every Student In Nottingham Must Do

Nottingham might not be the largest of cities in the UK but that’s not to say it doesn’t have plenty to offer. It’s packed with culture and fun things to check out – so much so that it can be hard to know where to start. So, to make it a little easier for you, we’ve compiled a list of 10 things every student in Nottingham must do, making sure there’s something for everyone.

1. Take a dip in the Ocean

Arguably the biggest student night of the week (particularly for Trent students!), Ocean Wednesdays are NOT to be missed. Fancy dress and VK’s at the ready, prepare yourself to embark on a messy bar crawl around the city with all of the university’s societies. You’ll eventually wind up at the renowned Ocean nightclub, swinging your top in the air as you sing your heart out to the Baywatch theme tune.

2. Go to a gig at Rock City

Great music, an amazing atmosphere and cheap drinks – what more could you want from a concert venue? Providing Nottingham with 35 years of live music, it’s recently played host to the likes of Circa Waves, Wilkinson and Neck Deep. So with music to suit every taste, it’s definitely worth a visit at least once during your time at university!

3. Have a pint in England’s oldest pub

Serving drinks since 1189AD, Ye Olde Jerusalem is the self-proclaimed oldest pub in England. Built into the famous Nottingham caves and next door to the castle, it’s probably the most best excuse to go for a pint you’ll ever have.

4. Dine with feline friends at the Kitty Cafe

If you’re a cat-lover then this one’s for you! Sink into one of the comfortable armchairs or sofas whilst cats roam freely around you. It even offers a selection of both hot and cold dishes, with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, meaning nobody is left out!

5. Visit the Goose Fair at Forest Rec

If you’re lucky enough to be in the city around October time, then make visiting the Goose Fair at the Forest Recreation Ground the top of your to-do list. Once a historical trade event, it’s now famed for  its pop-up fairground. And if being swung around in the air on a ride isn’t your thing, there’s plenty of food stalls to enjoy and games to play with your feet firmly on the ground.

6. Visit Pitcher and Piano

There are plenty of amazing bars in the city but Pitcher and Piano is by far one of the most iconic. Set within a converted church, admire the stained glass windows and interesting architecture whilst enjoying a drink and their tasty (but relatively cheap!) food. It’s sure to become a firm favourite with parents when they come to visit you.

7. Watch a film at the Broadway Cinema

In the quirky area of Hockley, the Broadway Cinema offers a discounted price of £4.50 for a student ticket; bargain! And don’t be fooled by how small it looks from the outside…it’s a lot bigger than it looks, and with comfy seats and plenty of leg-room, it’s the perfect place to watch the latest movie.

8. Take a look around Nottingham Contemporary

With free entry to most of the exhibitions they host, there’s nothing to stop you from having a look around and getting in touch with your cultural side. The gallery also hosts regular craft fairs and there’s even a gift shop in the reception area, selling a range of one-of-a-kind items that make perfect gifts for friends and family.

9. Go ice skating at the National Ice Centre

Follow in the footsteps of world-famous ice skaters Jane Torvill and Christopher Dean by visiting where they once trained (yes, really!) Whether you’re a pro or a beginner they offer classes to suit every level of ability, and even host club sessions on Friday and Saturday nights, when you can state to your heart’s content under the party lights and listening to local DJ’s.

10. Play adventure golf at The Cornerhouse

Ideal for dates or just somewhere to go with friends, the Lost City Adventure Golf course promises a fun-filled time. Decorated to look like, well, a Lost City, you’ll forget you’re in the heart of Nottingham’s city centre. And after you’ve completed all the holes, why not enjoy a drink or two? We’ll see you at the Tiki bar.

Here are just a few suggestions of things to do as a student in Nottingham, but really the list is endless! There are also pop-up events in the city all year round so keep your eyes peeled and you’ll always be sure to find something new and exciting to explore!
