The Ultimate Guide to Solo House Hunting

The Ultimate Guide to Solo House Hunting

Although it doesn’t have to be, house hunting can be one of the most stressful parts of a student’s whole uni experience. The assumption is that whatever happens, you’ll spend your whole uni life living happily in halls, flatshares, or houses; but unfortunately, for whatever reason, it doesn’t always work out that way!

We’ve put together our top tips on what to do if you have no one to live with at uni.

1) Calm it

There are loads of possible reasons for not having anyone to live with: your friends may have graduated before you; you might be a first year moving to a new city; you might have taken a gap year, or year in industry, or you might just fancy a change. Whatever your reason is for going solo, the first thing you need to do is relax. It’s a pretty common occurrence and it’s not the end of the world so chill out, okay!

You calm?

Okay, cool

2) Check Facebook

There are tonnes of university run Facebook pages, devoted to helping people like you. These house-hunting pages are great places for meeting like-minded people, and potential housemates. If you do find a group of people you’d like to live with, well done you; if you don’t find any housemates, or you don’t care who you’re living with, then no worries, you’ll still be able to find a place.

3) Just ask

There will never be a time where there is absolutely nowhere to live. If you’re struggling to find a place, just ask. There are some good landlords left in the world (like us!) who will try their best to find you a place to live at any time of the year.

4) Flexibility

While we’d normally suggest sticking to your guns and finding a place that meets all your requirements (you’d be amazed by the quality of some student houses!), if you’re leaving it until the last minute be prepared to make reasonable compromises. That being said, there are certain things that we believe every student house deserves: fast wifi, flat screen tv’s (set up with apple TV’s and chromecast’s, obviously), and support any time of the day.

5) Bills included

Bills being included in your rent payments make life a whole load easier. It’s one thing trying to organise bill payments with your mates let alone splitting bills with strangers. Trying to work out who spends the longest in the shower is a time-consuming activity; more often than not, you’ll have a load on your plate as it is

6) Think about Batman

Batman works alone, and look at all the good he has done! I guess he’s a billionaire so that does help, but being alone isn’t the end of the world.
