Where To Live In Coventry As A Student

Coventry has been described as one of the top 50 best places for a student to live in the world, and there is a reason for it. Making the decision of where to live while being a student has many factors encompassing it, so luckily for you we have compiled a brief guide of the best places to live as a student of Warwick or Coventry.

Earlsdon – Now this is an area of interest, Earlsdon is home to a huge majority of the student population from both universities. It is situated just west of the centre of Coventry, outside the ring road. It is equidistant from both universities by car and by bus, although not necessarily within walking distance. The houses here are mainly terraced which allows for a more affordable price, but they also have the luxury of the Hearsall Common and Spencer Park surrounding the area. Only a bus ride away from the centre of town where there are endless restaurants, schools of pubs and the ultimate student nightlife.

Stoke –  Stoke is not the most beautiful area but certainly has a big student population. The price of most accommodation is less, mostly due to the distance away from both Universities, significantly Warwick (40 minute bus), as it is situated on the East side of the centre of Coventry. However, it is on the fringe so greener areas are near, Stoke Floods Green, and a few local stores that satisfy every student’s needs. Notably The Biggin Hall and The Millpool are where students find themselves, if not going into the centre of town for the evening.

Barras Heath – Barras Heath is located North East of Coventry centre, making it fairly convenient for the Coventry University students (15 minute bus), although further away from the University of Warwick. However, this does not mean that popularity has declined, many of the houses are semi detached or terraced with very reasonable prices. Most students venture into the centre where there are many crowd pleasers, including, Phoenix and the Castle Grounds, as well as enjoying the buzz of the centre.

 Leamington Spa – Although Leamington Spa is not necessarily in Coventry it is still a huge hub for students, especially at Warwick University. You’ll find a range of houses here to fit all preferences, ranging from a one bed flat to a 14 person house. There are three main areas where students live in, the North, Central and South. These areas differ in the proximity to the town centre and also the liveliness, for second and third years you’ll find a plethora of busy streets but also quieter ones. Despite being a 30 minute bus journey into campus, students here are inundated with superstores, Aldi and Morrisons, and many late night takeaway go to’s.

Coventry Central – This area is buzzing with student life and local history. Secured in by the A4053 ring road, all accommodation here is in walking distance to anything in the centre of Coventry as well as the University itself. A Sainsbury’s on the corner and the Student’s Union makes it impossible to be antisocial. Housing here may be naturally dearer due to the location, for those who like the campus feel of the University living central will be for you. There are probably more flats and apartments here rather than houses, so invariably smaller sized groups. Also a 15 minute car journey to Warwick University makes it a hub for thousands of students from the friendly rivals.

Canley – Canley is another popular area to live, especially for Warwick students as it is within walking distance, and only a 10-minute drive to Coventry, situated just below the A45. The housing in this area is much more spacious with many more semidetached and detached houses, together with larger green spaces all round. The Canon Park Shopping Centre will cater for all your student necessities, from a Tesco to a Costa Coffee and a Boots. The Dirty Duck, The Phantom Coach and the Warwick Student Union are right on the doorstep of this area, where most students gather in the evenings.

Stivichall – Stivichall is directly South of the Coventry city centre making it equidistant to both Universities. This lovely area is home to many semi detached and detached houses, it also surrounds Quinton Park where students tend to wander when not on campus. There is a plethora of student budget restaurants and takeaways as well as the usual cluster of local markets and stores. The bus network takes you straight into the centre of Coventry so finding nightlife is not a difficult task.

Bishopsgate Green – This area has had a new improvement with houses developing along the canal, this gives a more attractive wake up in the morning than the bustling city centre. Although there are still many terraced houses available for large groups of people at a reasonable price. It is situated just West of Barras Heath but North of the centre of Coventry, thereby making location still feasible for students at Coventry but putting more distance between Warwick. Despite this, the city centre is just steps away where there is an excess of bars, pubs and nightlife with a strong student vibe.
